Echoes of the Machine is a three-minute animated short produced frame-by-frame using Toon Boom Harmony and composited in Adobe After Effects. The story follows Unit-734, a maintenance droid abandoned in an underground facility. After discovering an old human diary, the robot begins to experience what it calls "memory echoes"—simulated emotions triggered by its damaged neural core.
The animation combines hand-drawn character motion with dark, atmospheric backgrounds rendered in Photoshop. The project required meticulous lip-syncing, dynamic lighting effects, and a custom color palette that shifts from cold blues to warm ambers as the robot's "emotions" evolve. Sound design was created in collaboration with an independent composer using synthesized and found sounds.
This project demonstrates advanced skills in character rigging, scene composition, and emotional pacing. The main challenge was creating believable emotional expressions for a mechanical character while maintaining the cyberpunk aesthetic. Through iterative testing and feedback, we developed a unique rigging system that allowed for subtle facial movements and body language that conveyed the robot's evolving consciousness.
The short was screened at a local independent film festival and received recognition for its visual storytelling. This achievement validated our approach to blending traditional 2D animation techniques with modern digital compositing workflows.
